How to make Coriander or Malli Leaves Chutney(മല്ലിയില ചമ്മന്തി - Malliyila Chutney)

Ingredients

  1. Coriander leaves - 1 cup tightly packed
  2. Green chilly - 2 -3
  3. Pearl onions -10-12 or 2 medium sized onions
  4. Grated coconut - 3 tbsp.
  5. Tamarind - a small piece or 1/4 tsp tamarind paste
  6. Salt to taste
  7. Oil - 2 tsp

For the seasoning

  1. Oil - 1 tsp
  2. Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  3. Urad dal - 3/4 tsp

Method

  1. Wash, drain and chop coriander leaves (you can use the tender stems also).
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add onions, green chilies and sauté until onions turn pink.
  3. Add coriander leaves, grated coconut, tamarind and switch off the flame. Sauté in the heat of the pan itself.
  4. Once it cools, grind it with salt and little water to a smooth paste.
  5. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal, when dal turns golden brown, add the seasoning to the chutney.
